Argentinian Tango Night featuring Nextango
Appearing together for the first time, Nextango combines the talents of some of the Triangle's most experienced tango music artists. Comprised of Julian Hasse, bandoneon, Alma Coefman, flute, Alejandro Rutty, piano, Steven Landis, contrabass, Oswaldo Estrada, vocals, and Lorena Guillén, also on vocals, their lively blend of contemporary and traditional tango music is sure to have you tapping your toes.

Performer Bios -

Julian Hasse, Born in Buenos Aires, Julian attended the Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles as well as the Berklee Summer School. In Argentina, he developed a career as a bandoneon player, arranger, and orchestra conductor. From 2004-10 he served as a faculty member in the Academia Nacional del Tango in Buenos Aires. In 2006, he was selected to conduct a Tango Orchestra and to write original music for the World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany. As a music researcher, he has written scores of books about tango orchestration, bandoneon performance and repair, and the folk history of the bandoneon. He currently directs an Online Tango University from his home in Chapel Hill.

Alma Coefman, Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alma Coefman played in numerous chamber music concerts in Argentina, Japan, Italy, Canada and United States.  She was also member of different contemporary music ensembles.  As a soloist she performed with the Camerata Accademica di Padova (Italy), the Cardenal Newman Orchestra (Argentina), the Tsukuba City Orchestra (Japan) and the Concordia Symphony Orchestra (Edmonton). Currently, Alma performs and teaches the flute in the Triangle area ( Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh) of North Carolina.

Alejandro Rutty, Alejandro's compositional output includes orchestral, chamber and mixed-media music, arrangements of Argentine traditional music, and innovative outreach musical projects. His compositions and arrangements have been played by the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Argentina, National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil, Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Linköping Symphony Orchestra, the New York New Music Ensemble, the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, and the Cassatt String Quartet among other groups. Rutty's music has been published by Effiny Music, SCI/European American Music, and Ricordi Sudamericana.  Founder and Artistic Director of the Hey, Mozart! Project, Alejandro Rutty is currently Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Steven Landis, Steve earned an MM in composition (2013) from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and earned an MM in double bass performance (2002) and a BM in composition (1999) both from The University of Florida. Steven studied composition with Mark Engebretson, Alejandro Rutty, James Paul Sain, and Paul Richards and studied bass with Kevin Casseday.  As a composer Steven works with many mediums including solo instrumental, mixed chamber groups, large ensembles, digital and mixed media, as well as film and theater. Recordings of his work can be found on, Postcards a double-disc release by the Gainesville Chamber Orchestra and CURRENT recorded by trumpeter Adam Hayes and pianist Kris Carlisle. Works are available through Veritas Musica Publishing.

Lorena Guillén, Lorena was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, initiating her voice training at the National Conservatory of Music. She holds a Master in Vocal Performance and a Ph.D. in Musicology from SUNY at Buffalo.  Since her early debut at one of the tango evenings of the famous Café Homero (Buenos Aires, Arg.), Guillén has performed tango shows along with her husband Alejandro Rutty at the piano in a variety of venues around US. She has recorded a tango CD, Never Too Tango, featuring the participation of several guest artists.
